Two Ways to Lift Without Back Pain

BY DR. ARNAN SISSON

JUNE 4, 2018

I’ve had three of four clients that have come into the practice last week with back pain. And guess what led to their back troubles…lifting! So, this week, I’m going to give out a simple two-step approach that has been proven to reduce the odds of injury by roughly 50 percent!

Two things that usually cause these folks’ back injury is being too far away from the object they’re trying to lift and, even more commonly, having a bent/crouched back when leaning down to lift. Both of these situations put significantly more stress on the back, which leads to back pain.

So, what I tell folks is there are only two things you really have to remember when lifting. First, you want to get close to the object with either your feet around it or in a staggered stance. Second, you need to remember to keep your chest up. Doing both of these techniques will ensure that your back remains straight, and therefore, you’re less likely to sustain an injury from lifting.

I always tell folks that usually the simpliest bits of information can provide the largest amount of relief. So try this out when your picking up the trash, odd things around the garden, or even your kids/grandkids. It works very well.

That’s it for today everyone, remember movement is medicine!
